Congratulations to Manjot who is turns 5 in May.

May Curriculum

As the weather has been nice, we are all very keen to be outside as much as possible. We have started our gardening projects, learning about planting vegetables and flowers, about the importance of weeding and about seeds and bulbs as we plant our own. We have been naming the parts of the flower and doing some related art.

We weeded our vegetable beds and we planted vegetable seeds. Tying in with our healthy eating topic this month we are discussing all the benefits we get from eating vegetables (as well as other foods).

We have also been learning about the sun and why it is important for plants and animals and their categories – herbivores, carnivores etc.

We will be discussing the importance of wearing sun cream.

For the remainder of the month, we will continue with projects about the outdoors. The younger children will be learning about the Life cycle of the raindrop, and the Dandelion. The older children will be learning about a very important worker in our garden – the Worm. We will be making our own Wormery - this should be exciting as the children try to find worms to put into our wormery!!

In May we will also be talking about and starting to prepare those children that are leaving us in June for ‘Big School’ in September.

Aistear

Aistear talks about Children being strong psychologically. Being outdoors benefits wellbeing as it helps children to relax, feel calm and to control their emotions. Playing outside will help the children conquer their fears e.g. climbing or holding a worm. Outdoors, children learn about decision making and problem solving. They will develop skills for cooperating, helping, sharing e.g. taking turns on a swing. Adventurous play will teach them to take risks, and they’ll experience the consequences of not being careful, which is an important part of learning and developing confidence, building strength and resilience, teaching them to conquer fears, helping them make more sense of the world.

Clothing

As the early mornings are still quite cold, please continue to send the children in in their wet gear and coat and they can take these off when they warm up. Also, if you know the sun will be shining, please also put suncream on your child.

VIPs

Our VIPs this month are the 2 junior infant teachers from Athgarvan primary school who are kindly coming up to talk to the children about life in Primary school and the fun the children will have in September when they move on to their different ‘Big schools’.
